OUR IMPACT

As designers, we are completely responsible for the creations we bring to fruition. Every single item we put out to the world makes an impact, and we know that we have to be accountable for that. We take this responsibility very seriously, and carefully consider every step of the journey each piece takes, from initial concept to final product.

We have spent a lot of time bringing our pieces to life in environmentally conscious and ethical circumstances. We believe we have found the balance between designs that are produced from earth-friendly materials, while also being high-quality pieces that will stand the test of time. We aim to create products that you will love forever—and will last you that long too!

Buy less, choose carefully and shop consciously.

There's a lot of information here, but we decided from the beginning we wanted to make this an important part of our brand and to provide transparency for you. We personally like to educate ourselves as much as possible before choosing to invest our money in a product or company, so this information is for those of you who want to know all of that too.

CAPS

We are excited to share that we have collaborated with Indonesian brand Topiku to produce (in our opinion) the world’s greatest sustainable caps, ethically handcrafted from entirely upcycled and recycled materials.

Upcycled Organic Cotton

The main fabric of the caps is upcycled GOTS certified organic cotton twill deadstock fabric sourced locally in Solo, Central Java. Topiku work together with a manufacturer in Solo, Central Java, to collect their deadstock inventory. They purchase this discarded fabric in an effort to divert it from ending up in landfills—no additional energy, water, or chemical inputs necessary, just scavenging for hidden treasures buried in the basements of factories.

Recycled Plastic Brim

As a developing nation, Indonesia faces many challenges. Inadequate waste management services plague the archipelago, and the country is the world’s second largest ocean polluter. The capital Jakarta alone produces 7000 tons (28.5% plastic) of waste each day. Of the collected trash, only 7.5% (2% in rural regions) gets recycled.

Topiku works together with local pemulung (trash-pickers) to salvage plastic buckets (among other plastic items) from landfills. After the buckets are collected, they are shredded, washed, melted, and then remolded to form the inner frame of the cap brim. This plastic is easily bendable and flexible, allowing you to customize the curvature of the brim and personalize it to the unique shape of your head.

Recycled Aluminum

Topiku works with local pemulung to collect aluminium soda cans that are cleaned and cut open into sheets, and then used to create buttons for the top of the caps.

Upcycled Print Sample

As textile designers and print lovers, we couldn’t design a cap that didn’t have a hint of print. Each cap has one of our hand drawn or painted textile designs lining the underside of the brim. This fabric is repurposed from early samples of our organic cotton pareos.

Artisan Made

Topiku utilises ethical craft, by collaborating with local home industries in the village of Cigondewah in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Home industries allow men and women to work from the comfort of their own home, participate in a closely-knit community, and provide them a platform to share their craft through their specialized skills. Their community of hat-makers are the only employer of women in the Desa Rahayu neighborhood in Cigondewah. They offer both men and women equitable work opportunities and pay them a living wage of almost double the local minimum wage. This commitment to industrial ecology forms the basis for long-term sustainable environmental, social, and economic growth in these developing communities.

T-SHIRTS

All Soleil Soleil t-shirts are proudly made from 100% recycled cotton produced using a technology that is the first of its kind. Ethically made in Los Angeles, USA and screen-printed locally in Sydney, Australia. The fabric feels weighty and luxurious (like your favourite vintage t-shirt) and gets softer with every wear. Our t-shirts are a gender neutral size and shape—designed to be worn for decades to come.

Recycled Cotton

Our t-shirt factory collects the waste fibres usually discarded in the cotton production process and manipulates them in a brand new way. The result is 100% recycled cotton that is the first of its kind on planet Earth.

Ethically Made

Our factory keep a close relationship with partner factories and only does business with those who have ethical practices, do great work and with workers earning above the Los Angeles minimum wage.

These t-shirts are made without exploiting people or the planet.

Locally Printed

Our t-shirts are finalised locally in Sydney, Australia by a team who are leading the way in eco-friendly screen printing.

FABRIC

We are committed to only using natural fibres of outstanding quality, and our focus is on incorporating as many recycled fabrics as possible into our product range. In saying this, we acknowledge that creating any product from any material impacts the planet in some way and we encourage you to make an informed decision about your purchase. We hope the following information helps you to do so.

Cotton

Our woven blankets and bucket hats are 100% cotton. As well as being durable and extremely easy to care for, cotton is a renewable resource and is biodegradable—when it eventually needs to be disposed of, it can return to enrich the soil.

Cotton farming has made huge progress towards sustainability in the past few decades, but it's still not without fault. Conventional cotton crops rely on pesticides and insecticides for production, and these chemicals are released into the environment. Despite this, we believe cotton to be the best possible fabric choice currently available for our woven blankets and bucket hats.

Organic Cotton

Our pareos are made from 100% organic cotton. Along with all the benefits of traditional cotton, the organic variety is made without the use of chemicals, so the crops replenish and maintain soil fertility. Unfortunately organic cotton is still not perfect; producing the organic crop uses more resources, like land and water, than conventionally grown cotton. We’ve done a lot of research into the differences between organic and traditional cotton and there are a lot of conflicting opinions. Although there is no simple answer, in our opinion organic cotton is a slightly more sustainable option, so we have chosen to use it wherever possible.

Recycled Cotton

Our t-shirts are made from 100% recycled cotton, produced in Los Angeles, USA. Our t-shirt factory collects the waste fibres usually discarded in the cotton production process and manipulates them in a brand new way. The result is 100% recycled cotton that is the first of its kind on planet Earth. We are super excited about this, and look forward to incorporating more of this wonder-fabric into our range in the future.

Upcycled Cotton

Our caps are made entirely from upcycled cotton. The main fabric of our caps are made from discarded GOT’s certified organic cotton from Indonesian manufacturers, and Soleil Soleil sample fabric is repurposed as lining for the underside of the brims. We don’t believe in letting anything go to waste.

Each collection we design a t-shirt specifically to donate 100% of the proceeds to a charity that is close to our hearts.

For our debut collection ‘Lemonade’ we have partnered with Bush Heritage Australia—an independent not-for-profit that buys and manages land, and also partners with Aboriginal people to conserve the magnificent Australian landscape and our irreplaceable
native species forever.

100% of proceeds from the sale of the ‘Flower Market’ t-shirt will be donated to Bush Heritage Australia.

PACKAGING

Tags & Marketing Material

Our swing tags and printed marketing material are made from recycled and eco paper, and can be recycled via your curbside recycling bin.

Cotton Tote Bags

Soleil Soleil orders are shipped in custom made, 100% cotton tote bags. Please use this bag instead of single-use plastics for your shopping and groceries. (They also make great beach bags). If you don’t have use for this tote, please let us know in the checkout notes and we will happily package your order without one.

Sustainable Packaging

Soleil Soleil orders are shipped in a variety of different mailing bags and boxes, depending on the size of your order.

Small-sized orders are shipped in padded satchels made from recycled materials. Medium-sized orders are shipped in boxes made from recycled cardboard, secured with recyclable packaging tape. These can be reused, or recycled via your curbside recycling bin. Large-sized orders are shipped in compostable satchels. These can be reused, and eventually disposed of in your home compost bin.

CARE

The most sustainable thing we can do is to make intentional purchases, and care for those purchases thoughtfully.

Unfortunately Australia ranks number two in the world for textile disposal. The average Australian buys about 27kg of textiles per year and, incredibly, disposes of about 23kg per year. This has to change. We, as consumers, have the power to make a huge impact on these figures by first shopping thoughtfully, and then by making sure to take loving care of our purchases and make them last. Then instead of disposing, make sure to repair, up-cycle or swap clothing and textile products to keep them in use for as long as possible.

REPAIR

We want Soleil Soleil products to last a lifetime and we’ve done everything possible to produce the most high quality, thoughtfully designed pieces we can—but sometimes things go wrong. If they do, we’d love to help where we can.

If you've cared for your item correctly, and it still hasn’t held up to your life’s requirements, you can send it back to us for free repairs. If you’d prefer to make the repair yourself, we can send you the appropriate supplies. You're buying something that's made to last and we want you to be happy and to love using your Soleil Soleil pieces as much as possible, for as long as possible.

STILL WORKING ON IT

We're not perfect, but we're working really hard, constantly researching and trying to do better. We want to be super transparent with you about both the amazing things we're doing to decrease or offset our impact, while still informing you of the inevitable resources and energy used to produce our designs.

We love to hear your suggestions and are always excited to learn what you are conscious of, passionate about and looking for in a brand. If you have a suggestion for something we could be doing better, please get in touch to let us know.
